Our wonderful gardening volunteers, aka The Lavender Ladies & Laddies are out come rain come shine, gardening and beautifying the village. We have many other behind the scenes volunteers too. All play a vital part in raising funds, delivering projects and promoting Whalley in Bloom within and beyond the village.
We were fortunate to secure a grant of £1000 from the Parish Council in 2020 which helped us to plant and enhance many public spaces in the village.
A new wildflower bed was created in Autumn in order to provide an important source of pollen and nectar for our bees and other insects. The work was carried out on an area of grass in the centre of the village, involving the removal of all the turf followed by the sowing of a special mix of native wildflower seeds, which should come into flower in Spring 2021.
2020’s other activities included planting, general gardening, new bed creation, sowing wildflowers, weeding (of course!) and leaf clearing, as well as taking orders for and delivering Spring and Winter hanging baskets. All activities were undertaken with appropriate social distancing in place. We ran a fundraising Christmas Quiz too supported by our fantastic local retailers which raised £159 towards planting in 2021.
We are delighted to announce that 2021 is the 10th anniversary of Whalley in Bloom. If you’d like to volunteer with us and help us to make Whalley bloom throughout our anniversary year please do scroll down and contact us via the form below.
